As many new AWS customers quickly discover, there is a vast and growing universe of features and services available to securely manage their enterprise data on the AWS Cloud.  This blog focuses on helping customers who are planning a Mainframe-to-AWS data replication project, learn some of the more common and helpful terms, services, and best practices that will help ensure their successful movement to the Cloud.

How can I utilize the AWS Cloud with my enterprise mainframe data?

Let’s start with the assumption that a customer has chosen a mainframe data replication tool and is already replicating data between various on-premises sources and targets. Now, the customer is looking into moving data to a Cloud computing platform, and is exploring AWS.

For purposes of illustration, the following diagram shows an architectural overview of how Treehouse Software’s tcVISION data replication product provides mainframe customers with connectivity to the AWS Cloud. On the Mainframe side is the customers’ familiar on-premises environment with most of their mission critical data on various databases, such as IBM Db2, IBM VSAM, IBM IMS/DB, Software AG Adabas, CA IDMS, CA Datacom, or flat files. On the AWS side, there are features and services such as EC2, RDS, Aurora, S3, etc.  What do these AWS terms mean and how can they benefit a customer who wants to move data from their mainframe system to AWS?

Here is a quick guide with introductory resources to the most common AWS terms, databases, services, and best practices that you will encounter when planning your Cloud data replication project:

The Cloud – First of all, this is the “too embarrassed to ask” question: What exactly is the Cloud? Simply put, the Cloud is used to describe large data centers that are available to many users over the Internet. So yes, the Cloud is for-real, solid hardware that provides on-demand availability of computer system resources, especially data storage and computing power, without on-premises machines, management, and maintenance by the customer. AWS has advanced and globally distributed data centers that the most highly-regulated organizations in the world trust every day,

Additionally, the AWS Global Infrastructure is designed and built to deliver the most flexible, reliable, scalable, and secure cloud computing environment with the highest quality global network performance available today. Why does Global Infrastructure matter?

Instance – A “Cloud instance” is essentially a virtual server created for running applications on a public or private cloud network.

Amazon EC2Amazon EC2’s simple web service interface allows you to obtain and configure capacity with minimal friction. It provides you with complete control of your computing resources and lets you run on Amazon’s proven computing environment. Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instances to minutes, allowing you to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as your computing requirements change. Amazon EC2 changes the economics of computing by allowing you to pay only for capacity that you actually use. Amazon EC2 provides developers the tools to build failure resilient applications and isolate them from common failure scenarios.

Amazon RDS – Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient and resizable capacity while automating time-consuming administration tasks such as hardware provisioning, database setup, patching, and backups. It frees you to focus on your applications so you can give them the fast performance, high availability, security and compatibility they need. Amazon RDS is available on several database instance types – optimized for memory, performance or I/O – and provides you with six familiar database engines from which to choose, including Amazon AuroraPostgreSQLMySQLMariaDBOracle Database, and SQL Server.

Amazon S3 – Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) is an object storage service that offers industry-leading scalability, data availability, security, and performance. This means customers of all sizes and industries can use it to store and protect any amount of data for a range of use cases, such as websites, mobile applications, backup and restore, archive, enterprise applications, IoT devices, and big data analytics.

Amazon S3 Bucket – An Amazon S3 Bucket is a resource that the user creates in an Amazon region, in which to upload data (photos, videos, documents, etc.).

Amazon Machine Image (AMI) – an AMI provides the information required to launch an instance on AWS. In our case, Treehouse Software has three versions of the tcVISION Mainframe Data Replication AMI available on the AWS Marketplace:

  1. tcVISION Mainframe Batch Integration (MBI) for AWS – Bring Your Own License
  2. tcVISION Distributed Database Integration (DDI) for AWS – Pay as You Go on AWS
  3. tcVISION Enterprise Change Data Capture (CDC) Integration for AWS – Bring Your Own License

The tcVISION AMI automatically sets up the product on the AWS Cloud and allows customers to use it with either backup/recovery mainframe files or Windows files, or to set up connectivity for real-time, on-premises mainframe data replication to AWS.

Amazon CloudWatch – Amazon CloudWatch is a powerful Cloud infrastructure monitoring service that gives developers, system operators, site reliability engineers (SRE), and IT managers actionable insights to monitor applications, understand and respond to system-wide performance changes, optimize resource utilization, and obtain a unified view of operational health. Given the dynamic nature of AWS resources, proactive measures including the dynamic re-sizing of infrastructure resources can be automatically initiated. Amazon CloudWatch alarms can be sent to the customer, such as a warning that CPU usage is too high, and as a result, an auto scale trigger can be set up to launch another EC2 instance to address the load. Additionally, customers can set alarms to recover, reboot, or shut down EC2 instances if something out of the ordinary happens. Treehouse recently published a blog on Amazon CloudWatch.

AWS Direct ConnectAWS Direct Connect is a cloud service solution that makes it easy to establish a dedicated network connection from your on-premises computing environment to AWS.

Amazon KinesisAmazon Kinesis makes it easy to collect, process, and analyze real-time, streaming data so you can get timely insights and react quickly to new information. Amazon Kinesis offers key capabilities to cost-effectively process streaming data at any scale, along with the flexibility to choose the tools that best suit the requirements of your application. With Amazon Kinesis, you can ingest real-time data such as video, audio, application logs, website clickstreams, and IoT telemetry data for machine learning, analytics, and other applications. Amazon Kinesis enables you to process and analyze data as it arrives and respond instantly instead of having to wait until all your data is collected before the processing can begin.

Amazon Redshift – Amazon Redshift is a popular and fastest growing cloud data warehouse.

AWS LambdaAWS Lambda is an event-driven, “serverless” computing platform provided by Amazon as a part of the Amazon Web Services. It is a computing service that runs code in response to events and automatically manages the computing resources required by that code.

Cloud Infrastructure Monitoring: Finding Issues and Solving Problems With Amazon CloudWatch

At Treehouse Software, we specialize in helping customers’ legacy mainframe environment continue while replicating their data – in real time and bi-directionally – to an impressive variety of newer Cloud, LUW, and Open Systems databases. However, once “in the Cloud”, customers need the same visibility and understanding of what is happening with their data as they have in their on-premises data centers.

Unlike a traditional data center, with the AWS infrastructure environment, customers pay only for what they use, and the company is charged only for resource utilization.  Users can bring up EC2 virtual Windows or Linux instances for any length of time. For example, if the mainframe database bulk loads only take an hour to complete, the tcVISION EC2 instances can be brought up for the two hours needed, and shut down when the processing is finished.  AWS EC2 instances can be dynamically stopped and restarted while retaining its data on AWS Elastic Block Storage. This way, the business pays only for what is needed and the instance sizes (CPU, memory, and I/O bandwidth) can be optimized for the required mainframe data migration, or data replication process.

AWS resources, such as EC2 instances, storage, and databases can be rapidly provisioned and de-provisioned.  The allows customers to approach the architecture with an agile mind set.

Cloud Infrastructure Monitoring Made Easy…

This blog gives a high-level overview at Amazon CloudWatch, a Cloud infrastructure monitoring service that gives developers, system operators, site reliability engineers (SRE), and IT managers actionable insights to monitor applications, understand and respond to system-wide performance changes, optimize resource utilization, and obtain a unified view of operational health.

CloudWatch collects monitoring and operational data in the form of logs, metrics, and events, providing you with a unified view of AWS resources, applications and services that run on AWS, and on-premises servers. You can use CloudWatch to set high resolution alarms, visualize logs and metrics side by side, take automated actions, troubleshoot issues, and discover insights to optimize your applications, and ensure they are running smoothly.

Some customers are satisfied with a basic monitoring that polls every five minutes, while others need more detailed monitoring and can choose polls that occur every minute.

Observing, Reporting, Alerting, and Acting

Amazon CloudWatch allows customers to record metrics for EC2 and other Amazon Cloud Services (e.g., EBS (Elastic Block Storage), S3 (Simple Service Storage), etc.) and display them in a graph on a monitoring dashboard. This provides visual notifications of what is going on, such as CPU per server, query time, number of transactions, and network usage.

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud.  Amazon RDS is available on several database instance types – optimized for memory, performance, or I/O – and provides you with six familiar database engines to choose from, including Amazon Aurora, Maria DB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server.

tcVISION enables you to migrate or perform real-time replication between your on-premises mainframe and Amazon RDS databases.  Your business can rapidly deploy databases globally within minutes with minimal administration requirements.

There are several advantages of a Amazon RDS databases.  One especially powerful database is AWS Aurora which can be established as either mySQL or PostgreSQL API compatible.  Your business can leverage these key advantages:

  • Serverless Aurora: With serverless Aurora there is no database size pre-allocation required.  The database automatically scales up and down based on load and you pay only for the resources utilized.
  • High availability: HA is built into the architecture of Aurora, with six copies of data maintained across three Availability Zones. That is two copies in each Availability Zone (data center in a region), boosting availability with minor disruption even if an entire Availability Zone is down. In addition, the database is continuously backed up to Amazon S3, so you can take advantage of the high durability of S3 (99.999999999) for your backups.
  • Performance: Amazon Aurora provides 5X the throughput of MySQL and 3X the throughput of standard PostgreSQL running on the same hardware
  • Manageability: Amazon Aurora simplifies administration by handling routine database tasks such as provisioning, patching, backup, recovery, failure detection, and repair.
  • Storage Scaling: Aurora storage scales automatically up to 64TB per database instance, growing and rebalancing I/O across the fleet to provide consistent performance.

Using AWS tools, Auto Scaling, and Elastic Load Balancing, your application can scale up or down based on demand.

Unlike a traditional data center, with the AWS infrastructure environment, you pay only for what you use, and your company is charged only for resource utilization.  Users can bring up EC2 virtual Windows or Linux instances for any length of time. For example, if the mainframe database bulk loads only take an hour to complete, the tcVISION EC2 instances can be brought up for the two hours needed, and shut down when the processing is finished.  AWS EC2 instances can be dynamically stopped and restarted while retaining its data on AWS Elastic Block Storage. This way, your business pays only for what is needed and the instance sizes (CPU, memory, and I/O bandwidth) can be optimized for the required mainframe data migration. or data replication process.

AWS resources, such as EC2 instances, storage, and databases can be rapidly provisioned and de-provisioned.  The allows your corporation to approach the architecture with an agile mentality.  Once the initial design and architecture is complete, it can be rapidly tested and adjusted as required to optimize all aspects, including security, availability, performance, and operation readiness. The AWS environment allows users to experiment with various architectures and sizing.  For example, a customer can test various databases and EC2 instance sizes and types, and make changes based on test results to optimize sizing as required.

tcVISION CDC replication typically doesn’t need consistently high levels of CPU, but benefits significantly from having full access to very fast CPUs when needed. For example, there are significant spikes in mainframe database update activities, and tcVISION can benefit from very fast CPUs.  T2 instances are engineered specifically for these use cases.

Using AWS Auto Scaling, you maintain optimal application performance and scalability, even when workloads are periodic, unpredictable, or continuously changing.  AWS Auto Scaling continually monitors your applications to make sure they are operating at your desired performance levels.  When demand spikes, AWS Auto Scaling automatically increases the capacity of constrained resources, so you maintain a high quality of service.

Monitoring of environmental health

In traditional data center environments, vendor supplied infrastructure monitoring tools are often deployed to monitor the infrastructure environmental health.  They measure and alert on environmental factors such as CPU utilization, memory usage, network bandwidth, and disk space.

In the AWS environment, the CloudWatch environment monitoring is integrated with AWS resources such as EC2 instances and Relational Database instances. You can use Amazon CloudWatch to collect and track metrics, collect and monitor log files, set alarms, and automatically react to changes in your AWS resources. This allows you to set alerts at user specified thresholds and take proactive measures such as notifying individuals and taking automated actions on the AWS environmental resources.  Given the dynamic nature of AWS resources, proactive measures including the dynamic re-sizing of infrastructure resources can be automatically initiated.

The AWS environment is enabled for security at every layer.

AWS resources are contained within your Virtual Private Cloud (VPC).  The Amazon VPC enables you to launch AWS resources into an isolated virtual private network that you define.  The Amazon VPC provides features that you can use to increase and monitor security, and security groups act as a firewall for associated EC2 instances, controlling the inbound and outbound traffic.  Network access control lists (ACLs) act as a firewall for associated subnets controlling inbound and outbound traffic at the subnet level.  Flow logs capture information about the IP traffic going to and from network interfaces in your VPC.

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) enables you to manage access to AWS services and resources securely.  You can create users in IAM, assign them individual security credentials (access, keys, passwords, and multi factor authentication devices).  You create roles in IAM and manage permissions to control which operations can be performed by the entity, or the AWS service that assumes the role.  If you already manage user identities outside of AWS, you can use an IAM identify provider instead of creating IAM users in your AWS account.  With an identity provider, you can manage your user identities outside of AWS and give these external user identities permission to use AWS resources in your account.

Data can be encrypted at rest or in transit.  Data encryption capabilities are available in AWS storage, database services such as EBS, S3 Glacier, Oracle RDS, SQL Server RDS, Redshift and many other services.  Flexible key management options, including AWS Key management Service, allows you to choose whether to have AWS manage the encryption keys or to enable you to keep complete control over the keys.
